Cultural Geography

Course Description

This field class is based at the Kino Bay Center in Sonora, Mexico, and explores the relationshipbetween humans and the environment in the bio-culturally rich Midriff Island Region of the Gulf of California. Human communities and cultures are shaped by the land and seascapes, histories, languages, and geographies in which they develop. This course explores the cultural history and geography of the communities and cultural groups of the Sonoran coastal region of Sonora, Mexico. Students learn from readings, assignments, discussions, and interactions with individuals from the region's indigenous, rural Mexican, and urban communities. Students map the historical and contemporary geographies of major regional cultural groups, understand and describe the major historical events influencing cultural development and geography, and learn appropriate tools for studying culture. This course provides an excellent foundation for students pursuing further studies at the Kino Bay Center or Latin American Studies. SPECIAL NOTES: This class is offered at the Kino Bay Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies, Sonora, Mexico. Passport required.
