Biological Field Methods

Course Description

This course focuses on developing scientific questions and hypotheses, accepted field methods to address these questions, and means of analysis and summary - tools many employers seek. Students are introduced to various field methods, including those used by researchers at the Kino Bay Center. There are opportunities for students to learn and practice research methods with birds, marine mammals, invertebrates, and plants. These projects occur in various ecosystems, including estuaries, deserts, islands, and open ocean. Field methods covered in the course include those used to determine species identification, species richness, community structure analysis, population dynamics over time, and more. Using these methods, each student participates in one or more ecological field projects with the guidance of the course instructor and experts in seabirds/waterbirds, marine mammals, and plants.SPECIAL NOTES: This class is offered at the Kino Bay Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies, Sonora, Mexico. Passport required.
