Outdoor Experiential Education

Course Description

This course provides a hands-on introduction to the field of Outdoor Experiential Education, with a special focus on Adventure Education. Employing both academic theory and field-based practice, students explore outdoor teaching and facilitation strategies, logistical competencies, technical skills, and leadership approaches. Through classroom-based learning and outdoor experiences, students engage with current topics in outdoor experiential education and recreation. Throughout the course, learners will conceptualize key elements of outdoor experiential education such as inclusive community building, group development, experiential teaching techniques, communication, feedback, self-awareness, supporting others through challenges, risk management, and decision making, and other skills essential to a continued progression in facilitating and leading outdoor experiences. This foundational course for Adventure Education majors also allows students from all study areas to explore the many facets comprising this unique discipline.
