AE I: Expeditionary Instructor Develop

Course Description

This advanced field course is designed to equip learners with the tools to instruct in professional adventure education settings, including backpacking-based expeditionary contexts and either river or top-rope climbing outdoor education environments. This course develops experiential education theory and practice concepts grounded in fundamental expedition skills and models, teaching strategies, and technical skills. Through presentations, discussions, and practice, students will review and build on expedition skills and investigate fundamental theories and current issues in expedition leadership, including equity and belonging in outdoor education. Ideally, learners will be able to instruct basic outdoor skills from cooking to camp crafts and develop advanced rafting and climbing instruction skills while using the river or rock environments to build an inclusive community and inspire confidence. Finally, students will develop a diverse range of experiential teaching methods in preparation for the practica offered in AE II.

PREREQUISITES: ORI26002: Orientation: Desert, Mountain & Canyon Expedition; ADV22010: Introduction to Rock Climbing; ADV24202 River Guides Training or ADV24050 Environmental Perspectives & Whitewater; Or, equivalent experience granted through Permission of Instructor.
