Critical Literacy for Social Justice
Course Description
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will apply a critical literacy lens to analyze literature and how it is situated in a much larger political context that impacts educational access for Latinx youth. Freire and Macedo's theories on 'reading the world before reading the word' will be applied to the critical analysis of this literature. Students will have an opportunity to hear firsthand from several of the authors of the Tucson 'banned books' as they share their insights on this historical removal of acclaimed literature from the classroom. Teachers from the former Mexican-American Studies program will also offer insights into how this literature was formerly used in the classroom and the results of its removal.SPECIAL NOTES: N/A
