Community-Based Marine Conservation
Course Description
Issues facing the world’s oceans are explored through theoretical, community-based, and field-based lenses. The international nature of marine issues is emphasized, leading to studying international policy, social justice, culture, globalization, and trade. Traditional and alternative strategies for meeting marine conservation challenges are examined and analyzed. Students apply theoretical knowledge to real-world case studies in the coastal Sonora, Mexico. Through first-hand field observation and participation, students understand the complexity of many conservation challenges in the Gulf. For example, case studies in fisheries allow students to observe various fishing techniques, speak with fishers, learn through on-board observations, and evaluate the viability and sustainability of different management scenarios. Field observations are complemented by discussions with resource users, researchers, and managers. This course is offered at the Kino Bay Center.Special notes: This class is offered at the Kino Bay Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies, Sonora, Mexico. Passport required.
