Marine Conservation Practicum

Course Description
Students study and analyze the effectiveness, strengths, and shortcomings of marine and coastal conservation strategies and practices in the Midriff Island Region of the Gulf of California, Mexico. Each student can work alongside conservation professionals at the Kino Bay Center to contribute to an ongoing conservation project. Project work provides students with experience in applied conservation science, community-based conservation, habitat protection, traditional ecological knowledge, and science communication. Projects could include monitoring marine mammals, birds, or turtles, developing interactive interpretive displays, participating in community-based conservation projects, or evaluating alternative resource use. Students meet with management agency representatives, scientists, educators, and local resource users. Each student’s work is part of ongoing conservation efforts in the region. SPECIAL NOTES: This class is offered at the Kino Bay Center for Cultural and Ecological Studies, Sonora, Mexico. Passport required. Prereq is also previous coursework in Kino - this can be taken at flexible time periods during the semester.
